Cottonwood, Silver Maple & Elm Surface Roots
Along the Wasatch Front, three trees cause most surface root problems: cottonwoods, silver maples and Siberian elms. They grow fast, drink heavily and send thick roots along the top of compacted clay soil instead of down. Over time those roots rise above the lawn, crack sidewalks, lift pavers and turn a flat yard into a lumpy one.
Mower Damage & Trip Hazards
Exposed roots chew up mower blades, scalp grass and make trimming a chore. They're also a real trip hazard for kids, guests and anyone walking the yard at dusk. Grinding them below grade removes the hazard without tearing up the whole lawn.
Root Grinding With or Without a Stump
Most root grinding happens alongside stump grinding — we grind the stump, then chase the roots radiating out from it. We also grind roots on their own when the stump is already gone or the tree is still standing. On a living tree, we only take roots that are safe to remove and will tell you if one should stay.
Lawn Repair After Root Grinding
Grinding leaves narrow trenches of chips and soil. We rake out the chips, backfill with topsoil and level each trench so the yard is ready for seed or sod. Most lawns fill back in within a season.
811 & Blue Stakes Utility Safety
Roots often run right over gas, water and irrigation lines. Utah law requires a Blue Stakes of Utah (811) locate before any grinding, so we schedule it at no cost and wait the required 48 business hours. We also flag sprinkler heads before the grinder rolls in.
