Professional Stump Grinding in Utah

Utah Tree and Stump Removal is a locally owned stump grinding service based in Draper and serving every city in Salt Lake County and the Wasatch Front. We grind stumps of every size — from small ornamental stumps to 40"+ cottonwood monsters — and we do it cleanly, safely, and for less than the big national outfits.

Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal

For 95% of homeowners, grinding is the right call: it's cheaper, faster, and leaves your yard usable the same day. Full stump removal (digging out the root ball) only makes sense if you're pouring a footing or planting a large replacement tree in the exact same spot — it leaves a crater that has to be backfilled.

How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Utah?

Small stumps generally run $150–$200, medium stumps $150–$300, and large or clustered stumps $300–$600+. Multi-stump visits drop the per-stump price. See our Utah stump grinding cost guide for size-based price ranges and discounts.

Surface Root Grinding

Cottonwoods, silver maples, and elms are notorious for surface roots that tear up mowers and trip toes. When we grind a stump we can also grind the surface roots radiating out from it, so your lawn goes flat again. Ask about root grinding when you request your quote.

Stump Grinding Near Fences, Driveways & Structures

Stumps against a vinyl fence, up against a driveway apron, or in a curbside park strip need a narrower machine and more careful approach. We size the grinder to the gate and shield adjacent surfaces so concrete and fencing come through untouched.

811 & Blue Stakes Utility Safety

Utah law requires a Blue Stakes of Utah (811) locate before grinding. We schedule it at no cost to you and wait the required 48 business hours. That protects your gas, power, water and fiber lines — and it protects you from the repair bill.

What Happens to the Wood Chips?

Grinding produces a mound of chips and soil. We haul it away as part of the quote, or leave it as mulch for beds and pathways and reduce the price. If you want the hole topped with soil so you can seed, tell us and we'll level it.

How Our Stump Grinding Process Works

Text a photo of your stump (a shoe or tape measure in the shot for scale is perfect) and we'll usually send back a firm price within a couple of hours. We schedule the 811 locate, arrive with the right size grinder, take the stump 6–12" below grade, grind surface roots if requested, then rake, backfill and blow the area clean. Most stump grinding jobs in Salt Lake County can be scheduled within 3–7 days.

What Affects Stump Grinding Prices?

Transparent pricing — here's what moves the number up or down.

Stump diameter

Bigger stumps take more machine time. We price by width across the widest point, including flare.

Root spread

Some species (cottonwood, elm) throw wide surface roots. Add-on root grinding keeps your lawn level.

Access

A backyard-only or gated stump costs a little more than one you can drive right up to.

Depth

Standard grind is 6–12" below grade. Going deeper for planting or building costs a bit more.

Chip disposal

Haul-away included. Keep the mulch and we'll knock it off the price.

Number of stumps

Multiple stumps on one visit almost always drops the per-stump price.
